What is the Law of Attraction?
In a nutshell, the law of attraction is simply thinking and acting in a way that results in huge life changes…for the better. William Walker Atkinson said it best in 1909 in his book ‘Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World’ that “like attracts like”.
LOA is a very controversial subject and only makes sense to those who’ve benefited from it or are willing to believe in it.
The range of criticism goes from the Devil’s work of Anti-Religion to being the best-kept secret in the universe. Some who believe in a God look upon the law of attraction as being the opposite of what’s taught in publications such as the Bible. They see it as an evil deterrent to believing in the Almighty. I must say I find this pretty hypocritical.
From a personal point of view, I don’t believe in a God, but I believe, truly, that there is a substance of energy, yet confirmed in scientific areas, that can be used in conjunction with our thought process that will attract all the things we want and allows us to be the person we were meant to be. If this sounds a little kooky to you, dear reader, I fully understand.
I live my life using the universal energy of attraction, but it wasn’t always that way. I have had my fair share of misery in the first 48 years of my life; it has only been the last 4 years that my life has become a joy to live…and that is down to living, accepting and believing in the Law of Attraction.
So, perhaps I should briefly explain why I am in such a position to tell you why the LOA works.
It all started back in 2009 when after years of debt, illness, job losses, family problems, family bereavements, failed business ventures, depression, health issues, and a number of other crappy things that were happening to my family that I began to search for a reason why everything goes wrong in my life.
Money was a huge concern. When people say ‘Money isn’t everything’…it isn’t, but it’s the most important thing in many people’s lives. Without money, you’re screwed.
My husband and I had accumulated debts of over £100,000 over the years we’d been together, around 20 years, and this didn’t include the £100,000 still owing on the mortgage. We hadn’t been silly; we were hard-working, conscientious people, and pillars of society. I was a Nurse, my husband a lorry driver…normal folk. The debt was due to the housing market crashing and sending our mortgage payments sky high, we then had loans to cover it, then a re-mortgage, then the credit cards kicked in.
I was a Nurse, my husband a lorry driver…normal folk. The debt was due to the housing market crashing and sending our mortgage payments sky high, we then had loans to cover it, then a re-mortgage, then the credit cards kicked in.
My husband then almost died through Crone’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis a few months after our son was born. He spent 7 weeks in hospital in and out of HDU and Intensive care. It was a torrid time.
We then had to sell our one-bedroom house to move into a bigger one to accommodate our beautiful new arrival. We moved, lost a fortune on our house (it was the late 80’s), and were living in a ‘cheaper’ area. It would do for now.
Over the next 10 years, we couldn’t afford to even replace the carpets, curtains or furniture and were walking around in clothes we’d bought years ago. We made sure our son always had the best we could afford and he’s turned out to be the best son in the world and is our proudest achievement.
Then we had family bereavements when after long illnesses of the worst kind, which affected both of us deeply. I would spend 60% looking after my very ill parents, 20% at work, and 20% at home. My husband, who had been made redundant from his job at this time, looked after the house, cooking, getting our son to school, that sort of thing…again it was a torrid time.
When both parents died, we were at least able to form some sort of family life again. We also thought we would be able to pay some of the debt off with the sale of my parent’s house. But again, things went wrong and my siblings refused to sell up or even to buy me out, instead they wanted to keep the house for investment. The Will stipulated that the house should be sold but ONLY if all members of the family agreed. I was the only one who wanted to sell out of four brothers and sisters.
The Will stipulated that the house should be sold but ONLY if all members of the family agreed. I was the only one who wanted to sell out of four brothers and sisters.
My husband fell out with my family and I can understand why. I still talk to them of course, and visit, but why was this happening to us? Why did we have to live such a miserable life? Why didn’t good things ever happen to us?
At my wit’s end, I picked up a book by Wallace D Wattles called ‘The Science of Getting Rich’ and read it, and re-read over and over again. I could see how my attitude to life HAD to change. I could see that my emotions were all wrong, my thoughts were always negative and I realized I needed to be selfish…but in a good way.
The relief I found in Wallace D Wattles words gave me the hope I never thought I would ever see. I started believing.
That was in 2009 and I’ve become a true, undoubted believer in this ‘substance’ – this ‘energy’ – that has transformed our lives. I have since read and drank in the knowledge of such writers as Napoleon Hill, Elizabeth Towne, William Walker Atkinson, U.S. Anderson and more recently, Bob Proctor, Oprah Winfrey, and Esther and Jerry Hicks. There are new life coaches cropping up all of the time using it as a way to get the message across that thought has energy, and it’s here to stay.
My life has turned around and my belief in the LOA only gets stronger. The debt has gone, the family feud has healed, our health is better than it’s ever been, we have no negative thoughts and we live the lives we were meant to.
Coincidence? Not a bit of it. I now have time to ‘spread the word’ and point people in the right direction of life. If you are depressed and at the end of your tether, take a look around my website, there are lots of avenues for you to seek the life you want, get the things that you want out of life and begin to feel what it’s like to finally be at peace with the world.
How does The Law of Attraction Work?
You may not be in the bad place I was for so many years, but then if you are, try to find a copy of the movie ‘The Secret’ movie by Rhonda Byrne. This alone will give you some idea of what the Law of Attraction is. Even if you just want to attract a partner in life or want more money or perhaps a career that suits you, the Law of Attraction will help.
It won’t happen overnight though and you will need to believe from the very start. Many people give up after a 30 days trial and start to feel foolish. These are a sign that they’re doing it all wrong. They don’t truly believe.
Look for inspiring people such as Will Smith, Zig Ziglar, Jim Carrey, and Oprah. Read about their lives and what makes them tick. It didn’t happen overnight for them, they believed they would be a success in their field and their attitude to life is incredible.
Stop negative thoughts in their tracks. As soon as one appears, swat it away like an annoying fly and replace it with an alternative thought of benefit to you. Think of the law of attraction quotes such as “Whatever the mind can conceive it can achieve” from Bob Proctor and “I attract to my life whatever I give my attention, energy and focus to, whether positive or negative” from Michael Losier. These are just two quotes that not only make sense but also instill belief.
If you want that big house, or want that fantastic car or want a bank full of cash, live those thoughts.
In your imagination, live in that house, touch the furniture and walk from room to room, sit on the bed, open the kitchen cupboards and see the contents, look at the garden, watch TV.
If it’s the car you want, use the universal law of attraction to feel the steering wheel, smell the interior, look at the shine, drive it, feel the smoothness, listen to the radio with the windows down…see it, drive it.
With money, watch yourself go to the bank counter and ask for a withdrawal of a large amount of cash, see the teller smile, and wish you ‘good day’, feel the money in your hands, watch yourself smile as you leave the bank…live it!
And live those moments when you have a little time to yourself. Don’t force it, don’t pray for it, and don’t hope it will happen. Believe it is already yours and you’re just waiting for it to manifest.
“Be like a postage stamp. Stick to it until you get there” – Bob Proctor
Don’t read or watch the news so much. It’s pretty depressing anyway. Watch positive programs, comedies that make you laugh, people who make you laugh. Napoleon Hill always started his day off with a good hearty 10 minutes of laughter, although he did advise being away from the general public when doing so!
Be selfish. Not in a nasty way as in greed, malice, or being self-righteous, but in a way that you are looking after No1. You have to be happy with yourself before you can be happy in your life. Take treats often, thank a compliment aimed at you, have a little ‘my time’, meditate.
Around this website you will find courses, books, quotes, and articles giving examples of the law of attraction and all of it has passed my personal recommendations. You will not find any negative posts on here, only positive ones. I will not give any time to negativity…it’s a disease.
Does the Law of Attraction Work?
The LOA truly does work, but if you do not believe in it, well…you know the rest! Over the past 4 and a bit years, I have had people ask me if I’ve secretly won the lottery, or been left a large sum of money. And they say, ‘do you know how lucky you are?’ or “you’ve changed so much…what happened?”
I try to explain but most of them think I’ve gone a little crazy. Some think I’ve found God! No, I tell them I have changed my attitude and thinking process and feel the vibrations of the universe to use for the good. They then change the subject!
That’s why so many people don’t understand the Law of Attraction, or even try it. They don’t truly believe or want to believe. They think they will fail and it won’t work…and, of course, it does fail because their ‘deep down belief’ isn’t with them. It HAS to be there.
“You become what you think about most…
But you also attract what you think about most” – John Assaraf
Living the Law of Attraction is evident in all walks of life. Esther and Jerry Hicks’s book on the LOA have sold millions of copies but probably only a handful of people made it work. Those who fail are not in the right mindset.
They WISH it would work, they PRAY that it works and they HOPE it changes their lives…but to wish, pray and hope are a different kettle of fish. Where is the belief?
Oprah Winfrey, one of the most influential and successful people on the planet dedicated two shows to Rhonda Byrne’s The Secret. Why would she do that if she, herself, didn’t believe and use the LOA?
Jim Carrey, Will Smith, Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, Shakespeare, Walt Disney, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and countless other influential people have, or had, this thought process and lived exciting and rewarding lives.
How to use the Law of Attraction
With me, it was a case of wanting and getting more money. I tried so hard to pray for it, but never really believed in prayer. I hoped that something would turn up out of the blue, but that was just laziness and I wished, even consulting an alchemist, to have good luck forced upon me. None of them worked because I didn’t have the correct belief in those methods.
The penny dropped almost silently when it dawned on me that the money was already there, I just had to wait for it to materialize. (The Origins Reborn is a great course, by the way, and describes how these things come to be.)
By reading books such as ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ by Jack Canfield and ‘The Law of Attraction’ by Esther and Jerry Hicks, has cemented my belief. I have an indelible tattoo in my mind that this is how my life is to be lived. You need to get to that position to fully benefit from the vibrations of energy from the universe.

Your attitude will change without you even really noticing. By simply taking in everything positive you read about The Law of Attraction, your mind and thought process will start communicating with that universal energy substance and will change your life for the better.
Believing the Law of Attraction
This is the Secret. When you can believe that your thoughts can influence a substance that you can’t see, but feel, you will start to see the things you want, manifesting.
For non-believers, it’s impossible to get their heads around it. Take Gravity. It is a law that cannot be seen, yet happens every day. You know an apple will drop from a tree when the time is right by the force of Gravity. The energy is there to pull that apple to the ground, without gravity it won’t happen.
The Law of Attraction is the same. It is a law, it is energy; the only problem is that the majority of people who live within this energy simply don’t believe it exists. Those who do, eventually, see their lives become what they were put on this earth to be.
If you think something won’t work, it won’t. The energy expelled from that very thought attracts negative energy from the universe. Believe something will happen for the good and it will. The energy works both ways.
“All that we are is a result of what we think” – Buddha
Another problem why so many people refuse to believe in the Law of Attraction is that they’ve tried it and it didn’t work. They tried it for 30 days, 60 days, whatever and it didn’t work. This is probably because they forced the issue and wanted, deep down, for it to fail anyway. The LOA is not a trial. You live this way for the rest of your life. It is installed like a processor in your mind. If you need help to kick-start the Law of Attraction, try watching
The LOA is not a trial. You live this way for the rest of your life. It is installed like a processor in your mind. If you need help to kick-start the Law of Attraction, try watching affirmation videos and really get into them. Let them almost send you into a meditative state. Subliminal messages work and this is a great way to empower the mind.
Don’t give up on this; I’m very passionate about this energy that surrounds us all. It has worked for me and my family and is like a dear friend to me. I was in a dark place surrounded by the dense feeling of failure with no chance of getting out.
I escaped by simply thinking differently; it took time and patience, but the belief is too strong for it to be anything but the energy of the universe vibrating with my positive attitude.
What the Mind can Conceive it can Achieve
I believe that most people will have trouble with the very idea that there is energy all around us that can be in tune with our thoughts and manifest all that we want. I understand that. I would have been that skeptic 4 years ago. But I was in a position where I had to make a choice.
I could carry on with the way my life was going without giving the Law of Attraction a second thought or I could change.
I initially thought it was a pipe dream but I stuck with it and it rang so true as to why my thought process was extremely negative that things were always going wrong or failing. If I thought that way, always, then what I believed would happen, happened.
Everything around me was dour, stagnant, problematic, and tiring. I was sick of feeling this way and my life was giving the results of how I felt.
“Thoughts become things. If you see it in your mind,
you will hold it in your hand.” – Bob Proctor
It was only when I made my mind up to do something about it. I desperately wanted to live a better life but everything I tried to change it failed. I was a good human being but couldn’t understand why I didn’t get the breaks. I would resent people with happy lives or what appeared to be happy lives. I literally hated successful people. Why did they get all the luck? When I walked around my town I would envy people who were laughing and sometimes wanted to shout “WHY ARE YOU SO LUCKY??”
Only when I read Wallace D Wattles book “The Science of Getting Rich” did things begin to change. I continued to read other LOA books because it felt right. I got the feeling of relief when doing so and by tuning in to those thoughts my life began to turn around.
You have a choice here. Keep on living the life you’re expected to live or live your life the way you were meant to. If you can summon up the belief that in the universe, all around you, there is a substance you can’t see, but is there. This energy is for you; this energy tunes into your thoughts…it is up to you to choose the thoughts that the energy responds to.
You will start to feel it; your belief will become stronger and your life will benefit from your acceptance of it.
Some may say people like me are cranks, and I’m fine with that, in fact, it puts a smile on my face which I appreciate! I do understand them; I can see their doubt because I’ve been there and felt the same way some 4 years ago.
If you do want to believe and change your life, begin with reading books about the Law of Attraction, take courses, read quotes, and read about the people on my website. They are truly inspirational and have dug me out of a hole in which I thought I would never escape.
That’s how my life turned around and I will forever thank the universe for just being there.
Wow! Really amazing good stuff here. I only just finished reading the Science of Getting Rich but it is stories like these that really propel the thesis forward. I have been reading other stuff like Anthony Robbins theories but you are right. It is not the first few months that things really change, sometimes it is a muscle that has to get totally accustomed to the new way of thinking. The negatives will keep coming especially at the beginning to test you through the change. I ran my fastest marathon in Dublin October 2015, and things changed on the very morning. I just sat down quietly and put the thought in my head. Could I really run under 4:20? Then I let it go. Went out, took it easy and did it (with less training than I was supposed to) and finished 4:19:29! Gratitude is another attribute I need to strengthen. Grateful for reading this post.
I love your muscle analogy Diane! The LOA is like getting used to something that hasn’t been worked on before, or has always been there but just hasn’t been tested. Under 4.20 for the Dublin Marathon is a great time! A friend of mine ran the very same marathon in a similar time and he’s just entered the Snowdonia marathon for October 2016.
Thanks for sharing your experience….I’m not a runner, but my aim is to hike the Appalachian Trail, all 2160 miles of it, before I’m 58. As Napoleon Hill said: “Whatever Your Mind Can Conceive And Believe It Can Achieve“. How true!
Hi Gail,
I just wanted to say thank you for your website. This last year has brought massive, mighty changes in my life, and I’m shifting my perspectives, opening my heart, and letting belief into my bones. Results will come. Synchronicities show up and I smile knowing that each day I’m changing for the better. Letting go and relaxing, knowing I am taken care of.
I found your website a few days ago and am grateful for it. I look forward to reading more from you. Happy December to you!
Amy
Hi Amy,
Thanks for dropping by! I know that level of belief you talk of…not many can get to that deep level. It’s all about accepting that there is a universal force that you can control for your own good. Relaxing and letting it come into your life by the power of positive thinking is a great life skill to possess.
I’ve been a bit quiet on my blog of late simply because I’ve been travelling around Europe for the last few months and living the life I desire. I’m off again in the New Year, this time to America, but hope to find time to update my blog…maybe with a few photos and musings about my experiences on the road.
Exciting stuff….none of which I could have done without making a complete life-shift.
A Happy December to you too…and hope it continues for as long as you want.
Gail
I stumbled upon The Secret in October 2010 and have read countless books on the law of attraction, but I’m still getting the negative results. I do believe the law of attraction exists and it works, but it’s always giving me the exact opposite of what I need in my life. I’m not sure that anything can work for me anymore. I’ve lost my home, my job and have landed myself in some trouble with the law, for which I will now never be able to travel to the USA, which has been a huge dream of mine for many years, so, I can kiss goodbye to that. I’m homeless and broke, so what do you suggest? I’ve read probably the same books you have and still it fails. Anything you can put your finger on would be a great help. I can’t afford to sign up for countless programs and e-books trying to get the missing answers. I’d be grateful for any help in pointing me in the right direction. Thank you.
Hi Martin,
I understand what It’s like to be down, so down that you almost feel cursed in some way. Everything I did in life seemed to fail, no matter how positive I tried to remain, it’s sounds crazy but I really did believe that there was some sort of bad-luck entity all around me…a big dark cloud that hung over every move I made. Whenever I would try to do right, it always turned out wrong. If I had a decision to make with two possible outcomes, I would always choose the wrong one. It really took over my life and things were always getting worse and not better.
I’d been like this for most of my adult life until I finally was at breaking point. I was always the nice person who always helped people out and always put others first. At one point I even thought about becoming the exact opposite of my ‘nice’ nature and turn into some hard faced character who didn’t give a damn about anyone to see if that would make a difference. But I just couldn’t do it…it wasn’t in me to be that person.
I first read Wallace D Wattles book ‘The science of getting rich’, I expect you have too, and it really struck a chord with me. It was money that I wanted more than anything because it was the root of all our problems. I read the book 4 times before getting the audio version to put on my mp3. I listened to it whenever I told myself that I must believe that there in this universal energy that can tune into my thoughts. I know you probably know all of this, but it was new to me. Sometimes, the doubt would come and I’d have to fight it off by telling it to go away, even out loud (usually in my car with no-one around!).
My whole mindset started to change over time and I became really selfish. Not in a bad way, but I only wanted to take notice of things that I wanted to take note of. I stopped seeing people who made me feel uncomfortable, (even if only slightly uncomfortable), I stopped listening to the world news, my husband kept me up to date if anything was important enough to hear. I made myself smile each morning, even if it felt foolish or it didn’t feel right (which was often), I listened to music more, but only music I loved that made me feel good (The radio was rarely on). I started to believe the money problem would be gone soon and I was not to worry about it…because it was already sorted.
As soon as a negative thought hit my mind, I would bounce it away with a positive thought, then more positive thoughts. My mind would play tricks on me by forcing negative ideas into my mind, testing me to my limit, but over time they just gave up trying. I still do get them, of course, but they go as soon as they arrive…I never, ever dwell on a negative thought.
I started to feel better about almost everything, I was now nearly a year into this way of thinking. No money had arrived, but I had no doubt it would. Absolutely no doubt, the thought that it wouldn’t come never entered my head.
Then I started reading all about the Law of Attraction and in particular Bob Proctor. I watched his videos on YouTube over and over again. I was also reading books by Esther and Jerry Hicks, as well as any other Law of Attraction books. I lived the The Law of Attraction, The Science of Getting Rich, The Secret, Chicken Soup for the Soul…I was obsessed with it, but in a nice calm way and a true belief that this way of thinking would work.
I had my first breakthrough after about a year and I won’t say what it was, but it was the start. You don’t need to know how, but what happened never, ever used to happen to people like me. From there onwards the money started to come, it wasn’t unbelievable to me, because I knew it was already there. Just believe The Secret is simply to THINK. The money arrived to pay off the debt, not all at once, but over the next 4 years. My thought process has been that way for nigh on 5 years now, and life is good.
The first breakthrough was achieved by the result of being selfish. It does take a great leap of faith to believe in the Law of Attraction. Not once did I force the thoughts into my head, I simply thought in a relaxed way and brushed away negativity, no matter how many things were going wrong. As I said, the mind will test you and will try to bring in doubt at every opportunity. When you strongly beat the negative thoughts away, they become less inclined to bother you.
I know you’re in a bad place at the moment, but really reach, deep down, inside and ask yourself “Do I really believe?” – Deep down Martin…very deep.
You say the USA was a dream for you? Well you have to let it go. It probably wasn’t the place for you anyway, don’t dwell on the past and what might have been…it’s gone. Look for another place to travel, one that gives you a lift when you think about it.
If you don’t like the way you’re life is going at the moment, change it. You have the ability. You must believe that change will come for the better. I know you’ve tried before and things went wrong, but never give up. Don’t feel you have to do things to please those around you, do things that you want to do (obviously in a good way that will, in the future, benefit others). I know how ridiculously hard it is to get into the right mindset, but persevere.
The Law of Attraction really is there Martin. It’s the way you must live your life to feel the energy and to get in tune with that energy. The belief has to be as strong as a person believes in their God.
You can and will make it.
Gail
